1968 Chevrolet Camaro
This sad Camaro was brought to us completely torn apart, lots of parts missing, no motor or transmission, and part of the body work done (the other part rusting or bent). The plan is to finish the body repair, paint it silver with a candy burnt orange, custom interior, strong 454 engine backed by a 5-speed, NASCAR style rear suspension, coil-over front suspension, mini-tubs, narrowed 9-inch rearend, Vintage AC, and a seriously cool vibe!
This is how we got it - not much to start with:
This build took just over 12 months to complete, and the result has brought 3 1st Place finishes in it's first 3 shows, and as a feature in Chevy High Performance magazine.
The paint is a custom silver tone with a burnt candy orange separated with a charcoal grey pinstripe. Wheels are Billet Specialties GTX65 wrapped with Sumitomo rubber: Rear 17x11 w/315-30-17 and Front 17x8 w/235-50-17. A 4" functional cowl-induction hood really draws attention to what might be under that hood!
The focus of the engine compartment is a Fuel Injected 454 Chevrolet painted to match the silver body color, while the smoothed firewall and innerfenders carry over the burnt candy orange. The block has been bored .030 over, filled with Clevite bearings, forged pistons, ported iron heads with Manley valves, topped with an Edelbrock RPM intake and RetroTek Powerjection III Throttle Body system and self-learning computer. A March Performance serpentine belt drive system utilizing billet aluminum brackets and pulleys adorns the front of the block. Ceramic coated Hooker headers lead to 2.5 inch dual exhaust exiting through Flowmaster mufflers. A Be-Cool aluminum radiator and Perma-Cool electric fan keep this beast cool on hot summer days. The engine is lit off by a full MSD ignition system controled by a 6A box, pushing power to a Pro-billet MSD distributor and wires. All this power is transferred to a Tremec 5-speed manual gearbox and finally out to a Moser 9-inch rear fitted with 3.70 gears and positrac. All this power is brought to a stop with a Hydroboost braking system pushing the pads of Wilwood calipers and slotted/drilled rotors all all four corners.
All this fun stuff is held up by a Martz Chassis front clip that includes tubular upper and lower control arms and QA1 coilovers, a power rack and pinion, and splined anti-sway bar. The rear suspension is ready for the track, featuring Hot Rods To Hell centerlink truckarm suspension - just like the big boys of NASCAR use. The body is stiffened with subframe connectors, front frame supports and a 4-point rollbar.
The interior is covered in black and matching burnt candy orange from the outside. The dash is filled with Autometer Ultralite II gauges held in a Covans carbon fiber console. The center dash is custom formed and hold the Vintage Air controls that keeps the cabin cold. Procar seats by Scat keep the driver and passenger situated, and Simpson 5-point harnesses keep them from getting hurt. Other special touches include a center-mounted E-brake, 7-speed wipers, a Hurst shifter, and a Grant GT classic wheel. The entire was was rewired with a Painless Wiring harness.
